These monitors have allowed users to track how much oil has been used, but until recently the technology has been unable to fully benefit rural homes.

In response to the growing demand Dunraven Systems Limited has launched the new Apollo Smart Heating Oil Energy Monitor for use in domestic heating installations.

Dunraven Systems’ Managing Director, Gerry Jones explains: “The Apollo Smart Monitor incorporates breakthrough technology to analyse fuel costs, energy consumption and carbon emissions. It does so on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis. Apollo Smart displays real time temperature information too, whilst the unique ‘Days to Empty’ function reduces the likelihood of consumers running out of heating oil.

“Apollo Smart also monitors the level of oil in a consumer’s tank. And whilst most domestic oil tank monitors simply display the level of fuel inside the tank... Apollo Smart is different. It adapts for not only the height of the tank, but the shape of the tank too. This subtle yet significant difference, allows Apollo Smart to display an estimation of the volume of fuel remaining in both litres and as a percentage of tank capacity.”

The Apollo Smart Monitor can be integrated into almost any heating oil system in minutes without the need for any specialist training, tools or wiring. Unlike traditional domestic oil tank content gauges the Apollo Smart adapts to the height and size of the tank to ensure an accurate display of the fuel level remaining in both litres and as a percentage of tank volume.

Long terms cost, consumption and usage trends can also be monitored using Apollo Smart's powerful processor and onboard storage. Stored data is easy to upload onto any PC or Mac with the use of the inbuilt USB connectivity and can also be retained using the Apollo Smart App, which is due to be released soon.

The new product was launched at the Northern Ireland Plumbing & Heating Show and stands today as the first heating oil energy monitor.

Speaking at the product's global launch in Belfast, Dunraven Systems Limited's Managing Director Gerry Jones says, "The response to Apollo Smart has been truly fantastic. We've had visitors from across the UK and Ireland coming to the exhibition, just to see and to order the product.

"At a time of historically high energy costs, people have been quick to realise the advantages that breakthrough technology such as Apollo Smart can add to oil heating installations. From a technician's perspective, Apollo Smart also allows them to add real and meaningful value, to each and every oil heating installation they complete.

"Apollo Smart will be available from plumbers' merchants and fuel distributors over the next few weeks across Ireland and the UK. Indeed such has been the demand, it's already proven necessary to increase production volumes”

Benefits

Monitors fuel consumption, energy costs, and CO2 emission on a daily, weekly, monthly and annually basis

According to the Telegraph, energy firms owe £300 million in rebates to pre-payment meter customers and £200 million to non-gas customers who “missed out on good deals”.

After sharp rises in fuel bills, the regulatory body investigated into six major energy companies, British Gas, Eon UK, npower, EDF Energy, Scottish and Southern Energy and Scottish Power.

The results of the investigation found that there wasn’t any anti-competitive behaviour between the firms, but it did decide that some of the pricing was unfair and so demanded that customers are to receive compensation. According to Ofgem’s chief executive, Alistair Buchanan, not all the money has been returned: ”We've seen progress but it's certainly not the endgame. We've seen encouraging signs since the end of our initial investigation but we demand more and quicker action for those customers currently losing out.”

The price cuts Ofgem have demanded are soon to be passed on by Centrica, owner of British Gas. Phil Bentley, managing director of British Gas said: ”We are fully confident we will meet all Ofgem's requirements for transparency and fairness in our pricing.”

Martin Brough, utilities analyst at Dresdner Kleinwort, said the Ofgem demands are not as servere as they could have been. Energy firms have the opportunity to recover losses in the profits from other segments of the retail business.

Mr Brough said: ”This doesn't mean that the price cuts will impact on long term profitability. It's not as sweeping as it could have been. If it had said all prices are excessive and profit margins are excessive, that would have been significant. But at least Ofgem is discussing this in a rational manner rather than answering a political question about whether large profits are acceptable.”

Energy analyst at Inenco, Ian Parrett, also commented on the issue, stating that energy companies should prepare for more intervention into their profit-making: ”It's the first step from Ofgem, but there's still some way to go. There are some fairly large profits in the energy sector and it would be a shame if the money was recovered from other parts of the business.”

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://blog.rpm-fuels.co.uk/news/2011/11/30/ofgem-to-encourage-uk-households-not-to-lose-out-on-fuel-aid.html"><rss:title>Ofgem to encourage UK households not to lose out on fuel aid</rss:title><rss:link>http://blog.rpm-fuels.co.uk/news/2011/11/30/ofgem-to-encourage-uk-households-not-to-lose-out-on-fuel-aid.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>EDF News Ofgem fuel prices</dc:subject>

Energy firms have come under fire from regulator Ofgem and consumer champion Which? for the way they have dealt with the Warm Home Discount Scheme, giving low income households as little protection from the increasing fuel bills as possible.

Six energy companies, EDF, npower, E.ON, Scottish and Southern Energy, British Gas and Scottish Power have all been relishing huge increases in profit (£125 from the typical standard tariff), which could be due to the rise in fuel bill prices. Ofgem has stated that from October the average wholesale price will cost £605 per customer, compared to £570 in June.

EDF have announced a price increase for gas and electricity, with gas rising 15.4% and electricity 4.5% in November.

For those wishing to apply for the Warm Home Discount Scheme, it could be a long wait. According to the Financial Mail, energy companies are limiting the money they’re prepared to pay out under the scheme. Bar a group of 6,000 pensioners in receipt of pension credit, those who believe they’re eligible to apply under the scheme will have to wait and hope they are high enough up the queue to benefit.

The first set of payments under the scheme are due to be paid to households at the beginning of next year, giving the Government and Ofgem ample time to protest and demand all of those who are eligible for the £120 rebate should receive it.

Not only have these companies been feeling the heat from Ofgem, Which? have also been putting pressure on them for their disregard of informing customers of their cheapest tariffs.

Which? found that in nearly a third of cases, six major energy suppliers failed to inform and offer callers information on their cheapest tariffs. Of all the firms who were part of this investigation, Southern Electric came out the worst with only three out of the 12 calls made by Which? mentioning the cheapest tariff.

Ofgem are currently working on tariff reform proposals to encourage energy suppliers to simplify their tariffs.

Alex Salmond has been reported saying that the "cack-handed" decision to charge a windfall tax on oil companies "has done great damage". Without any consultation the supplementary charge on production has risen from 20% to 32%, which Mr Salmond has suggested has led to fewer fields being developed.

The First Minister has suggested that consultation on any new proposed changes will generate greater certainty and restore investor confidence in the industry.

Before the UK's largest oil and gas conference, Offshore Europe, the First Minister met with Malcolm Webb, chief executive of the industry body Oil & Gas UK, and Gordon Ballard, co-chairman of the organisation's board in Aberdeen.

Speaking before the conference, Mr Salmond said: "The Chancellor's shock decision to increase the supplementary charge on the North Sea oil and gas profits, without any consultation, has done great damage.

"The decision was described by Chief Secretary Danny Alexander as 'absolutely right' despite clear evidence that it would lead to fewer new fields being developed and greater reliance on more expensive foreign imports.

"What needs to happen is a new initiative, and I am now calling on the Chancellor to establish a procedure for a statutory consultation period of a year before applying changes to oil and gas taxation, in order to restore much-needed certainty and confidence and undo the damage caused by the Treasury's cack-handed conduct."

A Treasury spokesman commented: "The government is committed to stability and predictability in the tax system, and has introduced a number of measures to improve the way tax policy is consulted upon and legislated.

"However, it is also important to have the flexibility to respond to priorities, such as the record pump prices faced by motorists."

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://blog.rpm-fuels.co.uk/news/2011/10/25/vince-cable-announces-65m-renewables-investment.html"><rss:title>Vince Cable Announces £6.5m Renewables Investment</rss:title><rss:link>http://blog.rpm-fuels.co.uk/news/2011/10/25/vince-cable-announces-65m-renewables-investment.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>EPSRC ETI News Research Councils UK Energy Programme University of Edinburgh renewables</dc:subject>

Business Secretary, Vince Cable MP has announced a £6.5 million investment to deliver a new generation of engineering leaders in renewable energy. As part of the investment, industry leaders and top universities will be providing training for up to 50 of the best engineering students, as part of a new Industrial Doctorate Centre in Offshore Renewable Energy (IDCORE).

The Centre forms part of the Research Councils UK Energy Programme, which aims to position the UK to meet its energy and environmental targets and policy goals, through world-class research and training. The Centre will also form a key part of the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI)'s Marine and Offshore Wind Programmes, addressing a priority area for the ETI's engineering and technology developments.

The Energy Programme, led by the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) is investing more than £530 million in research and skills to pioneer a low carbon future. This builds on an investment of £360 million over the past 5 years. The ETI has so far invested £61 million in these two programmes.

Students will be expected to develop their entrepreneurial skills, alongside boosting their research and technical skills through understanding the needs of business.

During their training, students will be working alongside global leaders like EDF Energy, Shell and Rolls-Royce. They will be educated in the most innovative future technologies from designing cost-efficient new windmill blades to testing the latest wave energy technology at leading facilities like University of Edinburgh.

The first set of graduates are expected to begin training in January 2012, where they will gain an internationally-leading Engineering Doctorate.

Visiting the University of Edinburgh, who will help deliver the programme, Business Secretary Vince Cable commented:

"Engineering skills are vital for the growth of a more sustainable economy and are in high demand from employers. This scheme will see the industry working with universities to provide students with the training and commercial experience businesses want.

"Scotland has real strengths in renewable energy - wind, wave and tidal power, building on a strong tradition of hydro. These students will have the chance to work with some of the leading energy companies based here and tackle one of our biggest challenges - developing technology for a greener future."

The new Centre will see funding from the ETI and the EPSRC. Training will be undertaken by Edinburgh, Strathclyde and Exeter universities, together with the Scottish Association for Marine Science and consultancy HR-Wallingford.

David Ingram PhD, Professor of Computational Dynamics at the University of Edinburgh and Centre Director said:

"If the UK is to meet its ambitious targets for renewable energy deployment in 2020 and 2050 we need to dramatically increase the number of highly trained engineers with expertise and understanding in resource assessment, project planning, device development, grid integration and environmental impact. The 50 engineering doctorate students IDCORE will train over the next nine years will, I am sure, help the UK to maintain its position as a world leader in offshore renewables."

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://blog.rpm-fuels.co.uk/news/2011/10/24/secure-your-oil-tank-this-winter.html"><rss:title>Secure Your Oil Tank This Winter</rss:title><rss:link>http://blog.rpm-fuels.co.uk/news/2011/10/24/secure-your-oil-tank-this-winter.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>News oil tank thefts</dc:subject>

During winter, heating and diesel oil theft is a problem in many areas of the UK. In a recent survey it was revealed that thefts rose by 4% in 2010 and with concerns over the rise in crude oil prices, many are anticipating the number of thefts to rise once again.

The position of your oil tank can either make it easy for a thief or extremely difficult. At RPM Fuels & Tanks we recommend having your tank situated close to the home or building with windows giving you clear visibility of it.

Tip: Having lights switched on will also deter the thief.

If you place the tank near a road (although it needs to be a reasonable distance from it), driveway or behind a shed a thief may find it to be an easy target.

At RPM Fuels & Tanks you’ll find a number of products that will help safeguard your oil tank from potential threats. There are a number of products that will give the added security you’re looking for, including:

Locking Fill Point Cap
Spin Secure Fill Point Locking Cap
Watchman Alarm Oil Tank Gauge
Oil Tank Locking Vent Cap

For crime prevention advice, the Norfolk Constabulary has released this information for oil tank owners:

• Keep your tank in a well overlooked position – this will ensure thieves are more likely to be seen
• If your tank is close to your house make sure that it can be seen from your windows – this coupled with lighting will make it less of a target
• Security lights can help deter potential thieves. Low level ‘dusk ‘til dawn’ lights positioned close to the tank should, in most cases, provide sufficient light to illuminate any suspicious activity
• Enclosing your tank in a building that can be secured is better still. However, it’s important not to overlook the importance of ventilation, advice should be sought from your oil company
• If you have a gate keep it closed and locked when you’re out
• Make sure your perimeter fence is in good condition and is not easy to climb
• Invest in a good quality lock – you’ll find a great range at RPM Fuels & Tanks.
• Check your oil gauges regularly to alert you to any potential thefts and help investigations by narrowing crime times down – in the list above, you’ll find a Watchman Sonic Oil Tank Gauge.

All advice supplied is to inform you of ways you can make it difficult for thieves to steal your crude oil. The suggestions above will not make it impossible for them, but can make a significant difference.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://blog.rpm-fuels.co.uk/news/2011/10/20/ebec-highlights-biomass-innovations-ahead-of-rhi.html"><rss:title>EBEC Highlights Biomass Innovations ahead of RHI</rss:title><rss:link>http://blog.rpm-fuels.co.uk/news/2011/10/20/ebec-highlights-biomass-innovations-ahead-of-rhi.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>EBEC News Nuergy RHI bioenergy</dc:subject>

EBEC (European Bioenergy Expo and Conference) will be showcasing new biomass boiler technologies at this year’s event, held on 5-6 October 2011 at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire. The biomass boiler technologies will be showcased to coincide with the introduction of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme by the Department for Energy & Climate Change.

The UK’s largest dedicated bioenergy event continues to provide those involved in the production of the renewable energy to network with visitors. However, this year they will be able to have direct contact with those interested in maximising the financial benefits of the RHI subsidy.

The RHI, which is administered by Ofgem is a fixed, index-linked income paid to organisations for each kWh of heat produced by renewable technologies over a 20-year period.

Green Heat Module, developed by Wood Energy, is eligible for payments under the RHI scheme and is among the innovative biomass boiler installations, which will be on display at EBEC. The Green Heat Module is a biomass boiler system designed to be easily retrofitted onto large commercial, industrial or public buildings, ranging in capacity from 58kW to 999kW.

With everything in-built, Wood Energy can hook up to an existing heating distribution system and set the boiler in operation, eliminating the need to shut down existing heating systems. Once operational, customers can choose to maintain the boiler themselves or buy a service plan where fuel, meter readings and servicing are handled on the customer’s behalf.

Neil Turner, Business Development Manager, RES On-site, commented:

"The choices made in defining the design have been based on the experience and deep understanding of Wood Energy's engineers with respect to the application of world-leading biomass boiler technology to UK building services design, especially in a retrofit scenario, and the wood fuel available in the UK.

"It is our third year at EBEC and every year it gets bigger and better. It is one those events you have to attend if you're serious about biomass heating."

At EBEC, Nuergy will be unveiling the Janfire System Jet 600kW, the largest wood pellet burner to be exhibited in the UK. Nuergy is the sole UK distributor for Janfire, the longest established wood pellet burner manufacturer in the world.

The System Jet 600kW burner offers a high efficiency combustion process with very low emissions, an impressive amount of power, accelerated fuel gas flow for greater efficiency and a self-cleaning system to avoid service downtime.

Kenneth Paterson, Owner of Nuergy commented:

"Nuergy and Janfire has had a partnership for the past seven years, selling mainly domestic and small commercial installations. Now the System Jet range is being offered to the UK market for retrofitting as well as for boiler house containers or skid unit module formats."

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://blog.rpm-fuels.co.uk/news/2011/10/18/sanyo-launches-uk-solar-installer-programme.html"><rss:title>Sanyo Launches UK Solar Installer Programme</rss:title><rss:link>http://blog.rpm-fuels.co.uk/news/2011/10/18/sanyo-launches-uk-solar-installer-programme.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>News Sanyo solar installer programme</dc:subject>

Sanyo has announced the launch of its international solar installer programme, Sanyo Solar Premium Installer Programme in the UK. The campaign is the first dedicated support network of its kind for photovoltaic (PV) installers in the UK.

It’s been designed to provide sales leads from the business’s region, direct communication with Sanyo on the latest technologies and their own customisable micro site to help promote their business. As well as providing the business with independent recognition, the programme also offers added peace of mind for the end user looking to install PV systems in their home or office.

In addition to communication and sales support, Sanyo Solar Premium Installers are also offered training sessions up to twice a year. These training sessions will allow them to refine not only their technical knowledge on photovoltaic science and products, but also offer tailored sales arguments for different types of customers.

Ms. Marlene Muehlbauer, Marketing spokesperson at Sanyo Component Europe commented:

"The market for PV systems in the UK is growing dramatically, and the industry is evolving at a rapid pace. As most installers have diversified from being electricians, they face the significant challenge of keeping up with new technology and methods as well as the routes to order - the Sanyo Solar Premium Installer Programme helps across all of those issues."

Sanyo claims that direct marketing support from a PV manufacturer for installers is very rare in the UK. However, the direct connection aims to ensure installers are not only aware of new technologies, but also that they are able to develop and articulate the best solution for clients according to their unique needs. Dedicated PV installers can access the registration process at sanyosolarinstaller.com, which also provides detailed information on the benefits of membership.

The UK programme follows successful pilot schemes in Germany and Italy, where the solar market is more established. Ms. Muehlbauer continued:

"The feedback from PV installers in Germany and Italy has been very positive, with particular appreciation of the direct access to technicians and sales. The number of leads generated has also exceeded expectations, reflecting both an obvious benefit for installers to get involved and the need from consumers for a resource like this."

To qualify for the Sanyo Solar Premium Installer Programme accreditation, installers need to have installed 10 PV systems with Sanyo solar modules. This is proved by showing the corresponding Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certificates.

Once approved, Sanyo Solar Premium Installers are then provided with sales leads directly through the Sanyo solar website, where end users are able to look for approved installers in their area. Each installer will also be given a dedicated microsite that can be customised with logos, images and references.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://blog.rpm-fuels.co.uk/news/2011/9/30/petition-against-a-further-rise-in-petrol-prices.html"><rss:title>Petition against a further rise in petrol prices</rss:title><rss:link>http://blog.rpm-fuels.co.uk/news/2011/9/30/petition-against-a-further-rise-in-petrol-prices.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>Freight Transport Association News petrol price</dc:subject>

According to the Freight Transport Association (FTA) the rise in diesel prices over the past year has cost the road transport industry an extra £1.3bn. In July 2011 the cost of diesel (excl VAT) rose to 111.21ppl from 99.29ppl the same time last year. To put it into perspective the 12ppl (per litre) rise has caused the annual cost of fuelling a 44-tonne truck to increase by £5,700.

James Hookham, FTA’s MD of Policy and Communications commented:

“Diesel is not an optional extra for commercial vehicle operators and the result of more fuel tax rises will see either the destruction of companies or increased prices for customers, ultimately fuelling inflation

“Many companies in the logistics sector are approaching a tipping point and simply cannot afford to absorb the high fuel costs that they are facing. If the government wants to know what it can do to help growth in the economy – here is our number one ask; defer the duty increases planned for January and make further cuts in duty rates now.”

Furthermore the government plans to increase fuel duty by 4ppl in January and August 2012 as well as implementing actions to bring down and stabilise fuel prices. However, FairFuelUK has introduced a petition on the new Government e-Petition website for people to show their support against the fuel duty increase. For there to be a full debate in Parliament on the issue there must be 100,000 or more signatures; currently there are over 180,000 on its own petition at www.fairfueluk.com.

Mr Hookham continues: "The government wants to know what is the UK's top concern, well this is it. It is not just motorists whose lives are being made a misery, commercial vehicle operators whose businesses hang in the balance are being forced to make some very tough decisions - those that can't pass on their costs are in danger of falling into the abyss.

"High fuel taxes are doing massive damage to Britain's economy and if planned rises go ahead we will effectively be pricing ourselves off the road to recovery."

Quentin Willson, leader of the FairFuelUK campaign said:

“The Government says that it wants to know the issues that the public care about. We know from the massive support that FairFuelUK has already received that petrol and diesel prices are right up at the top of the public’s agenda. This is backed up our polling data. The wheels of the economy are literally grinding to a halt. The Government has a golden opportunity to boost growth, reduce inflation and give the economy the kickstart that it deserves by getting fuel prices down. I am urging everyone that cares about petrol/diesel prices and the economy to get behind this – let’s get the politicians talking about fuel.”

Robert Halfon, MP for Harlow said:

“A full debate in Parliament on petrol and diesel prices is a necessity. To those 'do-gooders' who say we shouldn't be using cars, I say get in the real world. The question is not can you afford to have a car - but can you afford not to: Britain is a great car economy. The cost of petrol is crucifying motorists up and down our country. Businesses, families, job seekers are suffering under the strain. High petrol prices are a break on economic growth, push up costs on frontline public services and act as a poverty trap to those seeking work.”

The FairFuelUK petition is formally backed and supported by the RAC (with 7 million members) and the two trade bodies that represent the UK road freight industry, the Road Haulage Association (RHA) and the Freight Transport Association (FTA), which have 20,000 business members between them.

</rss:item></rdf:RDF>
